Usha Janome Dream Stitch Sewing Machine is a hot-selling, most popular sewing machine from the Usha Sewing Machine company.
But why is it so popular?
It is not the only sewing machine with the features that it offers.
You have other sewing machine brands and models, which are offering the same or similar features, that a Dream Stitch sewing machine offers.
Then, what makes this machine a winner, and why should anyone choose it while there are similar models available in the market?
Before I answer this question, you need to know the current market insights - The main reasons, which are driving people to electric sewing machines and not choosing a manual sewing machine.
Reasons to choose an automatic sewing machine, than a manual sewing machine
For decades a manual stitching machine was found in most households. Whenever anybody chose a reliable sewing machine, it used to be a Singer or Usha. It had to be a traditional classic sewing machine.
But people's sewing machine preferences are changing now. They prefer an electric sewing machine over a manual or treadle sewing machine. The main reasons for this change is –
1. Lifestyle and expectation change
The lifestyles have changed. A sewing machine is no longer a tool to sew. It is as designer as any other appliance in your home.
Globally, manual sewing machine production has stopped or declined. Electricity is available in most of the places. People prefer to do less laborious work and invest in their hobbies.
People are ready to pay a little more to get a quality sewing machine with more features. This shift in people's preference has urged the sewing machine manufacturers to come with more features than a simple straight stitch function.
2. Comfort and Convenience
Automatic sewing machines have made sewing easy, which ensured lesser manual work.
Earlier people knew only one way to get work done – a lot of manual and time-consuming task to sew anything.
With globalization and industrialization, sewing machines are also updated. It has become possible to finish two hours sewing within 15-20 minutes, without having body aches and discomfort.
Now, it is more convenient to stitch and design any garment on one sewing machine, rather than looking for 2 or 3 different types of machines for various purposes.
As a result, people prefer to buy an electric sewing machine rather than a slow, manual energy-consuming sewing machine.
3. Budget-Friendly
In these days, a manual sewing machine price and a basic automatic sewing machine price is not very different. For instance, if a Usha Anand Straight Stitch Composite Sewing Machine costs around 6000/-, a Usha Janome Dream Stitch Automatic Zig-Zag Electric Sewing Machine costs a little more.
An automatic sewing machine offers better speed, features, stitch options, design, and portability than a manual sewing machine at a slightly higher price.

I am using Usha Janome Stitch Magic, and I tried other stitching machines to compare the best sewing machine for myself.
I found most Usha Janome sewing machines are similar in function, features, durability, and brand value. But there is an up-gradation of each product's freatures based on its price.

1.Design and Looks
Usha Janome Dream Stitch is an Automatic Zig-Zag Electric Sewing Machine, available in eye-catching design in white and blue color combination.
If you look at this machine and compare it with other machines such as Singer 8280, Wonder Stitch, or Allure, you certainly love it for its looks.
It attracts you instantly and has the appeal to catch anybody's attention. No doubt, the design wins full points.
But you can't buy a sewing machine based on its appearance only! Is it easy to carry and move?
2.Size, Weight, and Height
Usha Dream Stitch claims to be the best sewing machine for beginners. As far as I know (after teaching so many people), nobody wants a heavy-duty machine for the first time sewing.
A sewing machine must be lightweight so that you can carry it around with you to sewing classes, or move it to a corner or closet in your bedroom.
Some people like to surprise others by learning a new craft and suddenly show up their latest creation, which is really interesting. That is one of the reasons why they keep their sewing machine hidden.
Secondly, they do not have a dedicated sewing room designed yet, so they don't know if they should glorify their sewing workstation. Thus, you can adjust this sewing machine in a corner somewhere.
The dimension of Dream Stitch is 14.5 x 8 x 11 cm, which means it can be placed on any table when you decide to make a stitch. Or under the table when you are done with your work.
The Dream Stitch's weight is around 8 kgs, which means it is lightweight and easy to carry.
Considering its size, weight, and height, this Usha Janome Machine is a winner because it is lightweight, portable, adjustable in any corner. You can fit it on any flat surface or floor to sew your clothes.
The Usha Janome sewing machine comes with a handle so you can easily carry it from one room to another.
I liked that Usha Janome chose a compact design for Dream Stitch, making it easy to handle. But is this sewing machine user friendly?
Can a person learn to sew with a Dream Stitch, even if she never touched a traditional, manual sewing machine? Let's find out.
3. User Friendliness and Ease of Sewing
When you buy a Dream Stitch Sewing Machine, you can opt to receive a sewing kit. That means you can simply unbox the sewing machine and start stitching.
It is equipped with a sewing light, ensuring you get excellent visibility while sewing in dimly lit spaces. Moreover, the thread tension control makes sure the thread does not break while working on the machine.
Usha Janome Dream Stitch sewing machine is a free-arm model that incorporates zig-zag stitching as well. You can use this lightweight sewing machine for mending and stitching clothes of different fabrics in no time.
4. Durable Body and Parts
The Usha zig zag sewing machine's inner body is made up of aluminum, and outer covering is ABS (plastic and fiber). It is not as rough and tough as a metal body industrial machine, but this machine is durable.
Dream Stitch is best for home use sewing and designing, but it is not fit for garments' mass production.
If you want to start a sewing business, you need to buy an industrial sewing machine.
I learned sewing on a domestic manual sewing machine, and a manual machine is simple with a straight stitch function.
Before sewing on a Usha Janome, I also had the belief that a straight stitch machine is best because there is only one single stitch. You don't need to change stitch settings often.
Whereas, an automatic sewing machine has too many in-built stitches. Generally, people think if they change stitch settings often, it might damage the machine.
The truth is the opposite. Usha Janome machines are durable. Thankfully, I never needed to look for their warranty card since the day I bought it.
Janome is a Japanese sewing machine collaboration with the Usha sewing company. They have come out with a product that stands out for its quality and durability.
The dial and stitch settings can be moved many times, and it does not affect its functioning negatively. Multi stitch function can be used without any fears.
5. Features and Functions
Usha Janome Dream Stitch includes a buttonhole foot, and you can stitch on buttons. You don't need to buy any extra foot or accessories for button fixing or buttonholing.
You get a zig-zag foot for designing and one hemmer foot for hemming, a rolled hem, or picot stitch with the sewing machine purchase.
If you are a designing enthusiast, you can buy different sewing machine foot accessories separately from the Usha showroom directly or online.
The compatible foot accessories are – ¼" Seam Foot, Gathering Foot, Binder Foot, and Ruffler Foot.
7 built-in stitches include 4-step button holing; 14 applications including lace fixing, quilting, smocking, zip fixing, and rolled hemming. You don't get zipper foot and piping foot, but you can do these sewing functions using the foot provided free with the machine.
You can use flower foot, but for that, you will have to ensure that you have put a darning plate on the feed dog.
Usha Janome Dream Stitch Sewing Machines does not feature an auto needle threader to automatically insert the needle's thread. Higher models like Usha Janome Wonder Stitch and Usha Janome Stitch Magic have this feature to automatically insert the thread in the needle.
It is a portable sewing machine, and it does not have an extension table. Still, for a beginner sewing learner, the Dream Stitch sewing machine provides enough space around to sew comfortably.
The Dream Stitch Sewing Machine can interlock with dial selector "D," and you can use picot stitch with round hemmer foot.
With button holing and button fixing feature, you can quickly stitch buttons on shirts, dresses, or coats.
There is a dial option to select your desired stitch pattern, such as straight stitch, zig-zag, overlocking, etc.
Auto tripping bobbin makes sure that the thread is correctly wound around the bobbin.
Usha Janome Dream Stitch sewing machine provides 14 stitch functions. This is a fully automatic sewing machine with Japanese Technology.

6. What are the In-built Stitch Options
Usha Dream Stitch sewing machine has 7 built-in stitches and 14 applications to create a beautiful sewing and designing experience.
I learned sewing on a domestic manual sewing machine, and a manual machine is simple with a straight stitch function.
You don't need to change stitch settings often.
Whereas, an automatic sewing machine has too many in-built stitches. Generally, people think if they change stitch settings often, it might damage the machine.

The dial and stitch settings can be moved many times, and it does not affect its functioning negatively. Multi stitch function can be used without any fears.
7. What type of fabrics it can stitch
What Type of Fabrics can be stitched with Dream Stitch sewing machine?
Dream Stitch sewing machine can sew lycra, net, polyester, rayon, linen, cotton, denim, hosiery(T-shirt) clothes. You can sew different types of fabrics using the right side of the needle.
This beginner-level sewing machine recommends quilting, which means you can stitch on foams, fusing, buckram, and many fabric layers.
Though a Dream Stitch is not the right sewing machine to sew plastic polythene bags for selling, you can sew baby sleeping mats.
Remember that you need to use the right needle, thread, and material to get your work done. Sewing machine will stitch, but you have to do the machine settings on the right stitch length and width selector.
For thin fabrics like lycra, net, polyester, linen, etc., use needle numbers 11 to 14.
For medium fabrics like cotton and multipurpose sewing, use needle numbers 14 to 16.
For jeans, pants, shirts, and denim, corduroy fabrics use needle numbers 16 to 18.
If you want to do silk thread embroidery, use needle 11 to 14 numbers.
To sew any fabric on any sewing machine, you should coordinate the right sewing needle with the thread and fabric to get the best stitching results.
While sewing on hard joints and seams, rub a dry bathing soap (like Lux or Lifebuoy) on the joint, and the needle will pass through that hard, thick joint smoothly.
Don't force to stitch anything, where a machine needle refuses to pass through. If your needle is breaking or getting stuck while sewing a seam, use the handwheel to pass that joint. This problem may occur with any sewing machine while stitching thick fabric joints.
What kind of dresses, you can sew using Usha Janome Dream Stitch sewing machine?
Dream Stitch is the best sewing machine to do sewing crafts, baby clothes, small and medium sewing projects. You can sew a blouse, salwar, suit, Kurti,
You can do quilting, bag making, pillowcase, cushion cover, handkerchief making, sewing curtains, pants, shirts, etc.
You can decorate your saree with beading (using zig-zag stitch), fall stitching, and Pico edges. Anchor thread designing can also be done using a Dream Stitch Sewing Machine.
You can do straight stitch, reverse stitch, zig-zag designs, overlock the edges using zig-zag foot, picot stitch / rolled hemming, button sewing.
This sewing machine can handle small to medium sewing projects. Still, it is a domestic sewing machine and not designed for heavy-duty industrial mass production of garments.
8. Demo and Sewing Lessons
Some Usha Janome Sewing Machine sellers would promise you a demo, but it may take longer than promised time. If you learn to operate any one of the Usha Janome machine, you can operate any model.
You get free online sewing machine classes and one demo visit after purchase. I suggest that instead of waiting for the demo class, you can watch the Demo CD provided with Usha Janome Dream Stitch Sewing Machine and instruction manual inside the box.
When I bought an automatic sewing machine from Usha Janome in 2011, few YouTube sewing videos were available.
That machine was alien to me, but I managed to fill the bobbin, thread the machine myself. The Usha Janome Demo person came late, and I could understand the machine functions.
Anyways, he knew the technical terms and what was written in the manual. I could teach him more than he explained to me.
So, I can tell you with a real-life experience that doesn't rely on a demo and don't wait for the sewing company's demo representative.
Open the sewing machine manual, watch some YouTube sewing machine video tutorials, and start with your machine. Have no fear. It'll work perfectly well.
One more thing. All Usha Janome automatic zig zag sewing machine features are similar. Get a Usha Janome Stitch Magic tutorial. You can still learn to operate your Dream Stitch, watching that tutorial.
9.Service and Maintenance
After buying my Usha Janome, I didn't use it much for about one year because it used to cause some of the other trouble.
I always complained that thread breaks easily, design and embroidery stitch are not neat, fabric stuck, and did not move smoothly.
After doing a fashion design course and running a custom tailoring boutique, I started sewing on my Usha Janome more frequently. I realized that my ignorance was the main reason for all my sewing machine troubles.
A sewing machine requires regular cleaning and maintenance, and any model of Usha Janome Sewing Machine is easy to clean and maintain at home.
Now, I am sewing with my Usha Janome machine regularly, and I face none of the problems because I keep the bobbin area clear of dust and lint.
While I never needed company warranty or service but in case needed, USHA provides free home service and demo during a warranty period of two years.
You will get a warranty and services from USHA. Just after receiving the product, you have to register it by calling on the customer service number of USHA (the number is printed on the box and in the user manual).
To get demo or servicing, you can contact USHA toll-free service center at 18001033111
Suppose anything happens to your sewing machine during the warranty period. You can contact Usha Customer Care and Raise a complaint against the issue. In that case, their executive will visit your place and solve your issue.
10.Electricity Consumption
Usha Janome is an electric sewing machine, which means your machine takes rest when there is no electricity.
It works with electricity, and it has an in-built 65 watts electric motor.
When you buy a Usha Janome Dream Stitch sewing machine, you get one electric pedal that is easy to plug into the power supply. It is a simple plug and play sewing machine.
It consumes approximately one-unit electricity for every 10 hours of sewing operation.
USHA Sewing Machine LED bulb is a high-quality lamp. If you feel that bulb is the cause of overheating the machine, you can On and Off the side switch button, when you are not sewing. Though, I can tell you with my experience that the bulb does not heat the machine.
To save the electricity, you cannot switch off its bulb. It is recommended that you keep the bulb on, as it causes less strain on your eyes while sewing, and benefits you in the long run.
There is no need or provision to recharge Usha Janome Sewing Machine.
If there is a power failure, this will not stitch. There is no battery backup. But you can turn the wheel with hand to make some small stitches.
You can sew with a Dream Stitch for 4-5 hours or longer, but it is advisable to give it a few minutes rest when the motor gets heated.
I do more than 6 hours sewing projects, but I don't find it much of a problem, because anyways when you sew, you pause to iron the seams, cut some scrap pieces, arrange the trimmings and trials.
All these activities give your electric sewing machine enough resting time to cool down, and you can very well stitch for long durations.
11.Sewing Speed
The Dream Stitch automatic sewing machine is easy to use for a beginner. Still, it is not suitable for kids under 10 years of age.
Though, you can teach sewing to your kid under your close supervision and monitor her safety. It is a user-friendly machine and stitches smoothly, without uncontrolled fluctuation in speed.
The amount of pressure on the paddle controls the motor's speed, with low-pressure motor runs slowly, and with more pressure, the motor will run fast enough.
For a sewing beginner for home use, sewing speed is good. But if you have already worked on an industrial sewing machine, a speed monster, then Dream Stitch is not the right choice for you. It is an entry-level machine, suitable for everyday sewing.
Its motor is in-built, and speed is regulated as per the sewing machine model.

12. People's Perception and Reviews
Usha Janome Dream Stitch Sewing Machine is sold online since January 1, 2017. Since then, more than 3,495 verified customers have positively reviewed this stitching machine. Moreover, this is one of the bestsellers sewing machines on Amazon.
Not all people review products online. Thus I find this number really impressive for a beginner sewing machine.
These numbers show that sewing learners trust Usha Janome, and they cared to come back and write their reviews.
Though, I wonder if Covid19 lockdown is driving people to buy sewing machines in these months so drastically.
I agree that sewing as a hobby and vocation never lost its magic. Still, somehow sewing is revived during lockdown because most people had enough time at home to upcycle their clothes.
So, lockdown may be one reason why people bought a Dream Stitch as a beginner level sewing machine and learned to make new clothes for themselves.
This is a valid point; I liked the idea that Usha Janome is inspiring people to stitch, and keeping people busy and happy.
