What is an Umbrella Dress?
Any Circular dress, which is cut on bias and gives a flare like an umbrella is called an umbrella dress. An umbrella dress could be having joint or not, depending on the availability of fabric and economic usage by pattern cutter.
Types of Umbrella Dress.
It can be a full umbrella dress, which gives a full bloom round flare and opens like a big umbrella; or
It can be Semi or Half umbrella dress, which is cut on semi bias or economically using the fabric. It may have a flair but comparatively lesser than the full umbrella dress.
The dresses may vary in style and designs like umbrella frock, gown, maxi, skirt kaftan, poncho, top, tunic, kurti or anything which you want to style with a different cut on bias.
You can even make umbrella sleeves to your top or umbrella flare for your bottoms to add a style.
What fabric is ideal for an umbrella or circular dress.
Based on the purpose of a dress, fabric is chosen. Whereas for everyday summer wear cotton or cotton mixed fabric are good.
For wedding or special occasions organza, silk, crepe', velvet is popular. Whereas for a spring evening, free flowing fabrics like crepe, Georgette, chiffon are liked.
For winters, woolens can be used to make a circular dress or an umbrella dress. Due to the huge flare volume, an umbrella skirt keeps us warm and cosy in winters.
With natural fabric like cotton, lining is not needed but if we wish to add volume to our flare; inner lining would add grace and durability to a dress.

WHAT TO DO IF FABRIC IS NOT A HUGE SQUARE PIECE & I'M RUNNING SHORT OF WIDTH OF FABRIC?
An Umbrella Skirt is cut without any seam at the circumference but if we have insufficient width of fabric, we may cut it in two pieces and join them together.
